China Mobile to Set Up 90,000 GSM and Up to 30,000 TD-SCDMA Base Stations in 2011; Unveils Plan for TD-LTE

China Mobile plans to set up 90,000 GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) and 20,000-30,000 TD-SCDMA (Time Division-Synchronous Code Division Multiple Access) base stations in 2011, the Sina Tech News reported on December 1. The company is expected have a total of 300,000 TD-SCDMA base stations by 2012, up from the current 220,000, according to the same source, citing an anonymous source from China Mobile. China Mobile is dedicated to TD-SCDMA push in nine trial cities, including Shanghai, while aims to double the usage rate of its 3G network capacity to 20% by the year-end 2011, up from the current 10%, as well as enriching its 3G product portfolio, the Shanghai Daily reported on November 30.

 

As regards the development of TD-LTE (TD-Long Term Evolution), China Mobile recently announced that the TD-LTE deployment will be implemented in three phases during the period 2011-2013. In the first phase (2011), China Mobile will focus on the installation of high-speed broadband business based on TD-LTE technology, leveraging TD-LTE data cards and CPE (Customer Premises Equipment); in the second phase (2012), China Mobile is projected to debut multi SIM card, dual-standby mobile phones supporting TD-LTE standard, as well as other mobile terminals. By means of these TD-LTE mobile terminals, China Mobile is capable of developing high-speed connected network business, traditional voice business, and broadband multimedia business to boost its revenue; in the third phase (2013), China Mobile will have multi SIM card, single-standby mobile terminals available.

 

Meanwhile, China Mobile's mobile data traffic has continued to grow rapidly since 2007. In 2009, the total data traffic outnumbered voice traffic and enjoyed a 211% year-on-year growth. According to China Mobile's subsidiaries in many provinces, compared to that achieved in the first half of 2009, most China Mobile's subsidiaries reached a mobile data traffic growth rate between 300% and 400% in the first half of 2010 and the subsidiary with the highest growth rate even achieved a whopping growth rate of 600%.
